Bejoy Narayan Mahavidyalaya, located in Itachuna village of Hooghly district, has been dedicated to the noble mission of imparting higher education for 75 years.

The educational institutions established in Bengal during the first half of the twentieth century began through individual initiative and gradually evolved into large institutions. This holds true for Bejoy Narayan Mahavidyalaya as well, which was established in the second half of the twentieth century.

Behind every noble endeavor, there lies a phase of spiritual preparation. The initiative to establish the college was spearheaded by Sri Pratul Chandra Chowdhury and Sri Indra Narayan Kundu—key figures of the 'Prabuddha Bharat Sangha' in Itachuna village, an organization inspired by the ideals of Swami Vivekananda. On December 17, 1949, Dr. D.M. Sen, the then Education Secretary, visited Itachuna and stated that government officials would identify and provide state assistance to educational institutions that had been established through private initiative amidst the adverse conditions of the British era. Observing the surroundings of Itachuna village, he felt that providing government assistance there would yield fruitful results. The proposal to establish a college in this quiet rural setting—as part of the West Bengal government's decision to upgrade twelve schools to intermediate colleges under its 'Dispersal Scheme'—came as an unexpected development to the enterprising people of the region.

The next phase saw the establishment of the college. In accordance with government directives and guided by the counsel of the Ramakrishna Mission’s Swamijis, the seed of a mighty institution began to sprout. Driven by the noble inspiration of Swamiji’s educational philosophy, the founders set about the task of establishing the college. In their search for a suitably enlightened individual to lead this endeavor, they found the revered Acharya Gopal Chandra Majumdar. A philosopher deeply devoted to the ideals of Ramakrishna and Vivekananda, this gentleman serves as the Vice-Principal of Daulatpur College. He is a man of profound wisdom as well as administrative competence. Gopal Chandra Majumdar assumed charge of the college after visiting Itachuna village. Renowned professors joined the college one by one, uniting in a dedicated mission of service. Work on the college building, office, library, and laboratories proceeded at its own pace. Initially, a student hostel was established on the premises of the Prabuddha Bharat Sangha for students arriving from distant places. Eventually, Bijoy Mahavidyalaya secured affiliation from the DPI and the University of Calcutta.

Initially, the institution was permitted to teach select subjects in the Science and Arts streams as an intermediate college. In July 1957, as a 'sponsored college,' it received approval to offer courses in English, Bengali, Economics, History, Philosophy, and Sanskrit (Arts stream), as well as Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics (Science stream). Honours-level courses were introduced in 1959, starting with English Honours. Honours courses in Economics, Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry were introduced. The Honours department commenced operations in 1960, the same year the college came under the affiliation of the University of Burdwan and the three-year degree course was launched. Guided by the principles of discipline, punctuality, and the ideals of Swami Vivekananda, the college achieved success across various fields—including sports, academics, and research—and gained immense popularity within a decade.

Today, this college is a source of pride for both Hooghly district and West Bengal. It is a high-quality institution accredited by NAAC. The current Principal, Dr. Gautam Beet, is dedicated to transforming the college into a centre of excellence.

The college has established Swami Vivekananda's ideal of 'man-making' in society through initiatives such as scientific research, the creation of smart classrooms and language labs, the development of a Wi-Fi-enabled campus, cloud computing, biometric attendance systems, a high-quality library with online infrastructure, a history museum, the signing of MoUs with various institutions, and the organization of campus recruitment drives and job fairs.
